Design Constraints

(Definition of Constraints - Constraints Modelling [Online]. Available from: http://www.bath.ac.uk/mech-eng/constraintmodelling/Constraints.html (Accessed January 1st, 2017))

Constraints are factors that needs to be taken into consideration within a design project, as they set out a guideline to how restricted the project is.

Things that may restrict a project are:

- Planning Permissions

An application for the planning permission must be done, and depending on the outcome of the application either modification to the proposal are required or the plan was accepted and the project could proceed.

Within an application there are certain things required;

(Nationally)

  • A standard application form

  • Two plans, used as supporting documents (Location Plan & Site Plan)

  • Ownership Certificate A, B, C, or D

  • Agricultural Holdings Certificate

  • (if required) Design and Access Statement

  • Correct Application Fee

(Locally)

The local authority may also provide a list of requirements that needs to be met.

(For further detail on planning permissions go to the blog post 'Planning Permissions')

- Surrounding Buildings on Site

The buildings that may be in the vicinity of the project site may be listed or even the locals, the people living in the area, would also cause restrictions to the design.

- Time

For most projects the time in which it has from start to finish could be restricted, especially if the project has certain processes that can only be done during specific conditions. Or the project must be done to meet a deadline, for example the Olympic Park in London had to be built by the Olympic Games in 2012.

- Materials

The readiness and accessibility of materials are also a restriction, whether they are imported or sourced locally can determine the time it takes to complete the project.

- Work Force

Finding the correct workforce for the time frame of the project could be difficult, especially because they might not be working on just 1 project.

- Client

The client also plays a big role in the constraints, as they provide a brief of what they want and what they expect.

- Budget

The money that is provided from the client could also limit the design very drastically, as it can determine the materials used and the workforce.
