Fire Regulations Volume 1 - Section B1

General Housing

  • Early warning of Fire (provisions)

  • Installation of these previsions increase the safety

Sheltered Housing

  • Detection equipment (detect which part of the building is most in danger, so its allows for better evacuation)

Positioning the alarms

  • One smoke alarm on ever storey of a dwelling

  • Centre of the floor/room

  • Connected system when one trips they al trip

  • Has to be 300mm away from the walls

  • 25-600mm bellow the ceiling

  • Easily accessible

  • Not directly above heat producing equipments (heaters, in the bathroom etc)

Power Supply

  • Should be from mains

  • Electrical installation to comply with Part P (Electrical Reg)

  • Special wires must be used

Design and installation

  • Certified

  • Instructions given to the people

Means of Escape

  • 1storey building (internal corridors/windows)

  • 2storey fire escape windows in bedrooms

  • 3storey building - 2nd storey has windows escape, not 3rd higher

  • Staircase has protection to allow for longer time before getting effected by the fire (smoke etc.)

  • Fire escape window has to be specific, both side has to be able to open and clear (0.33square meter, and 450mm clear height space)

  • 1100mm above floor level

  • All doors to the stair to be fire resistance

  • Good circulated rooms

Things that were the key parts of the section:

-> this effects us on designing the layout to be suitable to incorporate the escape system and fire alarms

-> what precaution must be implemented

-> changes may need to be updated (as the population gets larger; people size)
