Site Inspection/Investigation

No matter the size of a construction project, a site investigation or inspection is essential. However, the depth of investigation may vary;

- Small Projects would require:

  1. Walk over the site

  2. Analysis of existing site records

  3. Trial pit excavation

- Large Projects would require:

  1. Full topographical survey

  2. Extensive Research of all existing site records

  3. Full subsoil investigation, including tests

The main processes needed for any projects are:

- Desk Study: analysis of all available existing information related to the site

- Walk Over Study: collection of new information, including reassessments made during desk study

- Ground Investigation: new data collected through direct methods such as samples from bore holes and sample pits

The reason site investigation is so crucial in a construction project is because;

- It helps reduce construction costs through better foundation designs and economic earthwork

- It avoids unforeseen ground condition problems

- Defends investors by minimising long-term deterioration

During a site investigation you would tend to look into potential hazards that may cause problems to arise during or after construction, things such as:

- Clay of high shrinkage or swelling potential

- Steeply sloping sites

- Filled sites

- Mining Areas

- Peat or other soft soil

- Old building foundations and basements

- Ground Water

Due to the fact that we are now building in more harsher and difficult land, the need for builders and developers to have all the sites checked thoroughly and carefully by specialised chartered engineers has increased considerably.
